Michel Reeverts aka Maquette is a fine artist based in Portland Oregon. Maquette’s paintings are a play on photographic “accidents” interpreted in acrylic and oils. The abstract visuals emulate the bokeh effect in photography, which are the out-of-focus shapes resulting from light beams traveling through the lens. In her paintings, the soft focus and unintended cropping of subjects become the feature rather than the mistake.
A photograph is the initial inspiration, but the finished piece is an intersection of abstraction and a familiar landscape. Because she doesn’t overwork the canvas, human brush strokes and pigment bring new life to the smooth, mechanical production of a photographic print. Replication is the interpretation of an inherently known visual rather than the directive.
